Yup, that’s right Maryland. Here in Maryland, another tobacco tax hike is in place for 2015. Currently a pack of cigarettes in Maryland cost between $7 to $8 and supporters of the tax are hoping to raise that price by a $1 next year. Maryland would be ranked at the 14th state with the highest tobacco tax in the country. They are currently in the 12th place.
With this tax hike, some believe that it will prevent disease rather than treating the diseased associated with smoking. Some anti-smoking advocates want to increase Maryland’s tobacco tax law by 50 percent. So instead of increasing it by a $1 it would be $2 or $3 per pack in 2015. However, some say this would be bad business for small businesses because this hike may actually push people to quit.
