A measure in Maryland outlined Tuesday will allow punitive civil penalties against some drunk drivers. Under this bill, drivers who are drunk and cause injury or death could be subject to fines. They will have to provide restitution to victims. If it is proven that the driver blood alcohol level is twice the legal limit, revoked license, or suspended license, the driver will have to compensate the victims. According to CBS, “Punitive fines also could apply to someone with a prior arrest resulting in a conviction, plea or sentence of probation before judgment within the last five years.”
