Well, Baltimore made the national news at the end of April and the beginning of May because of the riots that took place over the death of Freddie Gray. Freddie Gray, a Baltimore man who was arrested in Baltimore and died from a spinal injury while in police custody. His death sparked the riots that took place in the early month of May. Now Baltimore is back in the news because of its deadliest month in more than 40 years. Some are asking shouldn’t this bring as much attention as the death of Freddie Gray and the riots? Also, is the issue really police killing black males or black on black crime?
Let me give you some statistics from last month. Within the last 30 days, there has been 100 shootings, more than 40 people murdered and 100 plus injured. Forty-three people were murdered in May and numbers like that has not been seen since 1972. As of Monday morning, police says, “There have been 116 homicides across the city.” This time last year it was 81. The number of nonfatal shootings is 219 so far this year compared to the 120 around this time last year.
Despite this surge in crime, Baltimore’s Mayor insists that the city is improving.
