The US Treasury is taking suggestions for the new bill that will be reissued in 2021. Maryland Senator Barbara Mikulski petitioned for Harriet Tubman to appear on the bill. Harriet Tubman who was born in Maryland as a slave and lead many to freedom after escaping slavery in 1849.
The law will make Harriet Tubman the first woman to be featured on the American paper currency. This would commemorate the 100th anniversary of women gaining voting rights which came in 1920.
Tubman was name “Moses” by African-Americans and white abolitionist because of her part in underground railroad which led many to freedom.
